Cisco alone owns 819 of them, giving them 13.6 billion unique MAC addresses. And most large manufacturers own multiple vendor IDs. That gives enough addresses for 16.7 million vendor IDs, each getting to make 16.7 million devices.
The first 3 ocets in the MAC address codes for the manufacturer, the last 3 octets code for the device ID.
